Test cricket is the oldest format in international cricket which is played by the teams representing full member nations of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Pakistan national cricket team has been playing test matches since 1952. Since then, the national cricket team have played 420 test matches, out of which they managed to win only 136 matches, 159 drawn and lost a total of 125 matches.  Pakistan was the fourth most successful team in ICC test cricket ranking in 2017 with a winning percentage of 32.2 which as of 2018, has now significantly dropped over a period of 1 year, bringing them to 7th position, to date.

Since 2017, Pakistan has played a total of 7 test series against different competitors, out of which they got a victory in 3 series and 1 series being drawn. The journey started in late December 2016 when Pakistan was brutally whitewashed in 3 match test series by the Australians in their home ground which was probably due to the outstanding performance by the Australian batting line. After facing disgraceful defeat, Pakistan made a great come back in a very next series against West Indies by winning 2 matches in a 3-match series eventually, outclassed west indies in their home ground. In the 3rd and last series between 2017-2018, Pakistan once again got clean swept in 2-match series against Sri Lanka in UAE. Despite being a clean sweep in 2 series in a year, luckily Pakistan was able to hold 4th position in ICC Test ranking.

From 2018-2019, Pakistan was scheduled to play 4 test match series, against Ireland, England, Australia and New Zealand. The team won the series against Ireland and Australia and was able to draw the series against England by winning 1 match in a 2-match series.  The series against New Zeeland has been a bit of drama as the team showcased that they have still maintained the number 1 spot in being the most “Unpredictable” team. The tour of New Zeeland in UAE started wonderfully for Pakistan as they clean swept the Kiwis in t20 series and drawed the ODI series and then all of a sudden the momentum started to shift towards New Zeeland as Pakistan’s batting lineup crashed once again in 1st Test match which resulted in a New Zeeland’s victory over Pakistan by just 4 runs at Abu Dubai. Pakistan bounced back by winning the 2nd test match but was unable to win the series.
Baber Azam has been the key test batsman for the last two years, having the decent average of 35 runs, including 1 hundred and 7 fifties while on the bowling side, Yasir Shah has been the leading wicket-taker, got 43 wickets in the last 6 matches maintaining a decent economy rate of 3.1.
As of December 2018, Pakistan holds the 7th spot in ICC Test ranking with 2579 points and 92 rating. Pakistan can jump up to 6th spot by winning just 1 test match, slipping Sri Lanka down to 7th spot who have 93 rating.
